Rating Points and Measurement

The rating points and measurement system used in these guidelines is exclusively compiled by the Rulebook Staff (and myself), and is used by both the Board and the Rules Committee to measure the relative importance of different types of scoring plays. The system was last overhauled in 2005, and will be used until the next ABC Rules Review in 2016. This system is currently under continual refinement in the form of the ABC Rules Online Replacement Process, and is likely to be further tweaked over the coming years.

When rating a scoring play we are considering four elements: the effective distance of the scoring shot, the number of scoring shots that are required to put the scoreline on target (number of marks that were kicked in the chances), the accuracy of those scoring shots, and the opportunities that were created for other players to score during the scoring shot. These elements are judged on the criteria below:

The distance of the shooting position to the goal, and how far the player was going to go into the circle or for a mark at the time he kicked the goal.

A mark must be caught by an opponent or another player, or must be thrown back in by an opponent before the player could use the marking opportunity.

A player can score a behind if he catches a ball thrown back from a mark, but only if he has not passed it before that throw back in.

The shooter must possess the ball when he does the action

The number of scoring shots that are required to put the scoreline on target (number of marks that were kicked in the chances). The system is intended to measure the relative importance of scoring shots with respect to the established methods of measuring goal scoring and goal scoring chances.
